Respiratory Therapy

Your doctor will review your symptoms. He or she will plan your treatment. They can make healthier living suggestions. Your doctor may also recommend you meet with a respiratory therapist.

Respiratory therapists (RTs) are trained to evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing problems like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. Your RT works closely with your doctor and other specialists. They help your RT create and modify a care plan that's right for you. This plan could include breathing exercises, teaching you how and when to take your medicines, and recommendations for changes in your daily life.

Check with your healthcare professional about these techniques to make sure you are performing them correctly.
